The Indiana Union of Literary Clubs (organized June 1890) and the Indiana State Federation of Women’s Clubs (organized March 7, 1900) and admitted to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (March 13, 1900) united to form the Indiana State Federation of Clubs (November 16, 1906). The name was changed to the Indiana Federation of Clubs at the Richmond Convention, in 1910. The date of the beginning of the Indiana Union of Literary Clubs was chosen in 1916 as the beginning of the Federated Club work in Indiana. Universal Membership was accepted at the Fort Wayne Convention, in 1929, to become effective January 1, 1931.
Becoming a GFWC member means joining a local GFWC club.
GFWC Indiana club members live in cities, suburbs, and rural communities around the state. They are professional women, students, stay-at-home moms, and retirees, united by a shared commitment to volunteer community service.
Members of GFWC clubs are encouraged to focus their efforts on Community Service Programs and Special Programs in Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention and Advocates for Children that meet local needs and take advantage of our national network of organizations and programs that have provided a framework for over 100 years of accomplishment.
Club members serve their communities in the five GFWC Community Service Program areas and GFWC focus areas: Arts and Culture, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Libraries, Environment, Health and Wellness.
With over 60,000 members strong, GFWC is united in its dedication to volunteer community service. GFWC members work in their communities. While diverse in age, interests, and experiences, all clubwomen are united by a desire to create positive change in their communities.
GFWC Indiana is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501c3 organization. In any given week, GFWC clubwomen across the state are preparing meals for the homeless, sewing blankets for kids in foster care, supporting our veterans, collecting and distributing new and gently used books to children to promote literacy, and much more.
